Mountain Weekly News ~

When you’re in Party mode on the Aleck Punks and the Aleck Nunchucks, your day on the hill becomes something out of an epic fiesta-on-the-hill flick. As my son and I cruised around, not only did it allow for some comic banter, it also let us talk through where we were going, to chat on the hill, and when I was teaching him to snowboard it was helpful to share advice mid-ride.

And when I let him ride off with his buddies, I can call him to figure out when they’ll be down so we can get a lap, or a bite, or so I can go off on my own without him waiting for me. Yeah, Aleck has truly made something magical for shredding families, friends, and anybody else you want to party with on the hill.

What Are Aleck Punks?

First let’s talk about the Punks. These are two separate small rectangular devices with mics and speakers built in that hook onto your helmet’s chin strap. They have a 12-hour play/talk time. They have an IP65 standard dust and waterproofness, wrapped around their 22×14 waterproof elliptical dynamic driver.

The Punks are made with ABS reinforced by polycarbonate but at 10 g weight these hang comfortably on your helmet, all but completely unnoticeable. Their mics have enhanced speech features to block wind and since they tie into your phone via Bluetooth, these walkie-talkie adjacent devices have unlimited range.

Then there’s the Nunchucks. The Nunchucks are smaller square speakers connected by a cable that fit over or, in some cases, into the earflaps of your helmet. They’re a little bigger than the Punks, rocking two 40mm titanium drivers.

They have 18 hours of play/talk time on a full charge (Jackson pointed out to me that his had longer battery life than mine), with IPX4 water and sweat resistance. They’re a little heavier than the Punks, at 57 grams but like the Punks their range is unlimited.

Does Aleck Work at a Ski Resort?

My son Jackson was beyond amped when I came home with the 2-way speakers. He couldn’t wait to test them out. We unboxed them quickly, and spent a night getting them set up.

We had to download apps that connect the Alecks through our phones. It took a while to figure out the app, to troubleshoot the Bluetooth connections, and to learn the button combos – on the Nunchucks there are big buttons in the middle of their wide flat sides while there are small little toggles on the edges of the Punks. You click them once and they let you talk, you can control the volume, and there are various other controls possible the little buttons on the devices. I got the Punks and Jackson got the Nunchucks.

Aleck Party Mode

We took them out to Targhee and as we headed up, we turned on the Party mode over the app, allowing for a live 2-way streaming of our conversations. Without Party mode, though, you can also call each other over your headsets.

Or if cruising alone, these are Bluetooth speakers that help you to crush pow to your favorite tunes. As I discovered when he went off with his friends and I ripped a few top-to-bottom runs solo. And though we were no longer in party mode, I called him to see where he was since his friend had to get down to catch the shuttle and Jackson picked up immediately.

What Can Be Improved?

There is one drawback – these work through your phone’s network. So if you’re riding at a place like Grand Targhee, with sus cell reception towards the base, you’ll lose your Aleck connectivity and have to reconnect things when you go back up. But it was worth it for Jackson and I to be able to fly down hill connected like a couple pilots flying in formation. And for us to keep comms up all over the hill while we’ve had walkies lose connection due to the interference of trees and ridges.

It was also great for me to remind him to keep his head up when going from heel to toeside.

Overall Impression

Aleck’s Punks and Nunchucks are sure to be the essential new device for a family adventure, a weekend with the homies, or anywhere else you want to fly in formation at high speed.
